Church & Society Shane Claiborne Event an Inspirational Eye-Opener

The "Tearing Down the Walls: Ways of Doing Justice" event on October 24th featuring Shane Claiborne was a huge success!  There were over a 100 participants from the Roanoke District, and neighboring Districts of Danville, Lynchburg and Staunton, over one-third of whom were youth and young adults!  Asked if they would to attend an event like this again, almost all replied positively with comments such as ""Yes, Yes, Yes!!  This has been great!", "Not only for the information but for the hope it gives", and "Well organized and a compelling speaker."
In his presentations Claiborne expounded on the meaning of Christian social justice and how we can break down walls of injustice such as economic inequalities, educational disparities, and racial divisions.  He gave particular attention to how we can empower persons to overcome walls of separation and engage others in social justice issues.  Through examples and personal stories he dramatically brought out how we can best reach others not by confrontation but through engagement that disarms and leads to dialogue and building community - starting where we are, one neighbor at a time.
Your Committee on Church and Society anticipates offering workshops in 2016 to go into greater depth on selected issues.  Stay tuned for more information!
Special thanks are due to First UMC, Salem, for providing facilities for this event; to Bonnie Jones from Thrasher UMC, for overnight hosting of Shane and his wife, Katie Jo; to our District Superintendent, Rev. Kathleen Overby Webster, for her support and leadership at this event; to the several volunteers who led small groups and helped make the event go smoothly, and to the District Board of Mission and Church Extension and the Emerging Program Fund of the District Common Table for grants that helped to make this event possible.
